Doubt is starting to seep into the clubhouse, namely over Nolan Arenado, as the St. Louis Cardinals continue to suffer defeats. At this point, the outstanding third baseman likely regrets he had authorized the winter deal that sent him to the Houston Astros. However, a recent interview with Bill Ladson of MLB.com demonstrates his focus on the future. The past is the past.

During his talk with Ladson, Arenado covered a number of themes. The most important of these was his and the Cardinals’ future. He isn’t getting any younger, and the team has spent the last few seasons in purgatory with little hope of recovery. The eight-time All-Star provided frank answers to issues that have since resurfaced over his long-term position in St. Louis.

Strangely enough, Arenado sounded like someone who has no choice over whether or where he is transported. However, the aging star’s contract contains a complete no-trade provision. Has he forgotten that he used it to cancel the aforementioned trade with Houston this past winter?

Regarding his recent 34th birthday celebration and his “left in the tank,” Arenado sounded a little uncertain. The veteran maintained his composure while allowing himself to continue his remarkable, maybe Hall of Fame career.

“I don’t know,” Arenado’s response was. “I enjoy how I feel at the moment. I think I still have a lot of energy left. I think I still have a lot of baseball talent. I think I’m displaying that now. Of course, it’s a long season.

But when Arenado talked about whether he’s done enough to have his plaque put in Cooperstown, he may have unintentionally hinted at his intentions to continue playing.

Arenado’s voice said, “I am not sure if I am [a Hall of Famer] or not.” “I feel I have a lot left in the game, so we’ll see at the end of it where I’m at.”

It’s questionable, though, if Arenado will be able to show off what little juice he still has left in St. Louis. He is aware that the Cardinals are reversing a little young movement, and that if they don’t turn things around, it may result in some challenging conversations.

“Hopefully, we are winning so we can add at the [trade] Deadline,” Arenado said. “If not, I’m assuming some questions will arise.”

However, Arenado’s ultimate goal is just to compete. He wants to try the postseason again. He is looking for a chance at atonement because of his lack of October baseball exposure and his failings in those few opportunities.

“I want to win,” said Arenado. “I want to participate in the playoffs and provide my best performance. Opportunities have been few for me. But I haven’t done anything with the chances I’ve had. I aspire to return there and improve as a player.

Arenado may take matters into his own hands if he truly wants to compete for a crown. Who would like to remind him?
