It has been rumored that for the past few months, the St. Louis Cardinals have been attempting to move third baseman Nolan Arenado. However, negotiating a deal has been difficult because of Arenado’s no-trade provision.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic, an MLB source, has hinted that the Cardinals would make a surprise trade offer to get Arenado from the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers are not among the six teams that Arenado has allegedly cleared a trade to. Bowden’s whole trade proposal to transfer Arenado to Detroit is as follows:

Received by the Detroit Tigers: 3B Arenado, Nolan Received by the St. Louis Cardinals: RHP 3B Josh Randall Rucker, Carson “Arenado has a full no-trade clause and has not indicated he would accept a move to the Motor City,” Bowden stated. But maybe the eight-time All-Star would give Detroit, a postseason club with one of MLB’s finest and deepest five-man rotations, another chance.

“Arenado, 34, is hitting well this season. 108 OPS+ at 254/.341/.402 with three home runs and nine doubles. With outs over average (a measure of range) in the 92nd percentile, he remains a formidable defender at third base. The Tigers, who have a youthful squad, would also benefit greatly from his seasoned guidance. This makes a lot of sense if Arenado were to agree to a contract with the Tigers.

According to reports, Detroit was in serious competition to sign Alex Bregman, a third baseman, but lost out. The next best move to help the Tigers win the division would be to acquire Arenado. All of this won’t matter, though, if the veteran infielder for the Cardinals refuses to waive his no-trade clause with the Tigers.
