Even before the middle of May arrives, the Boston Red Sox have already had to contend with a number of injuries. Right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler is among the most recent pitchers to be sidelined, making the Red Sox’s starting rotation one of the areas most affected by injury.

Over the weekend, Buehler was put on the 15-day disabled list due to right shoulder pain. It remains to be seen how long Buehler’s spell will endure, but Boston fans, who are already fed up with the constant injuries, were alarmed by the experienced RHP’s placement on the injured list.

The good news is that all indicators point to a rapid recovery. The bad news, at least for Buehler, is that he feels a little ashamed of the whole injury issue.

Red Sox RHP Walker Buehler Won’t Be Sidelined by ‘Embarrassing’ Shoulder Injury for Long

Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported on Sunday morning that Buehler only intends “to miss two or three starts before returning to Boston’s rotation.” However, the short rehabilitation period has made the Red Sox’s offseason signing feel ashamed that he was placed on the injured list in the first place.

“I’m a man who has persevered through many challenges. It is rather humiliating for me that I had to go on the IL even though it was only bursitis,” Walker said. “I think there are certain things you have to check off during the week to be able to go and start a major league game, and I wasn’t able to do those things.”

For those unfamiliar with the term, bursitis “is inflammation” that can be caused by bones, muscles, and joints rubbing too much. According to WebMD, the issue “usually gets better on its own after a few weeks of resting the affected area,” which corresponds with Buehler’s healing expectations.

Hopefully, the 30-year-old righty starts up from where he left off upon returning. The former Los Angeles Dodgers hurler was turning things around after a difficult start to the year, finishing 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA and 22 strikeouts in his previous four outings (24 1/3 innings).

It would be fantastic for Boston’s prospects if Buehler continued to play the way he has lately. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are presently tied for the ninth-best odds on DraftKings Sportsbook with +2000 chances to win the 2025 World Series.
