Micah Shrewsberry and Notre Dame have made a significant acquisition for the Irish basketball program’s future.

The program has declared that Jon Sanderson will take over as the next Director of Strength and Conditioning for Men’s Basketball.

Sanderson comes to South Bend after a year with the Vanderbilt team, but he spent 15 seasons at Michigan, where he helped lead the Wolverines to over 300 victories and 10 visits to the NCAA Tournament.

“Jon is a great addition to our Sports Performance team and basketball staff,” Shrewsberry said in a statement. His arrival to our program is revolutionary since he is considered to be among the top strength and conditioning instructors in the nation. We want to be a program that prioritizes player development, and Jon is a perfect fit because of his history of success at several other colleges.

The native of Ohio also played for Marshall, North Carolina, and Clemson. Sanderson attended Ohio State from 1997 to 1999 and Ohio from 2000 to 2002 as a basketball player. Sanderson started for Ohio State’s Final Four-winning squad as a sophomore.

In the statement, Sanderson said, “I’m honored to join Notre Dame as the Director of Men’s Basketball Strength & Conditioning.” “Coach Shrewsberry has created a fantastic culture and a solid basis. I really think that this program is about to take off. I’ve known Coach Shrewsberry for more than two decades; he’s one of the game’s most intelligent and sincere leaders. I’m thrilled to give what’s currently being constructed here a new depth. Being able to influence Notre Dame Basketball’s future is an honor, and I’m totally dedicated to the goal.

Additionally, Sanderson coached more than thirty Michigan athletes that made it to the NBA.

Notably, Sanderson’s son, Jonathan Sanderson, a 2026 point guard, received an offer from Notre Dame in September 2023 when he was a student at Saline High School in Michigan. Besides Notre Dame, Creighton, Detroit Mercy, Duquesne, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Marshall, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio, Ohio State, Oregon, Purdue, Rutgers, Texas A&M, Toledo, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Xavier have also extended offers to the four-star prospect.
