Pat Garrity, a graduate of Notre Dame, was appointed general manager of the Fighting Irish women’s and men’s basketball teams on Tuesday.

At Notre Dame, the dual general manager position is brand-new and is thought to be just the second in collegiate athletics to supervise both men’s and women’s sports. A comparable role, established in 2023, is held by Baker Dunleavy for Villanova’s basketball programs.

In addition, Garrity, 48, will serve as the main sports administrator for men’s basketball.

The Milwaukee Bucks selected Garrity in the first round (19th overall) when he graduated in 1998. With 2,085 career points, he remains seventh in Notre Dame’s history.

The 6-foot-9 big averaged 7.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 552 games (107 starts) over his ten seasons in the NBA, playing for the Phoenix Suns (1998–99) and Orlando Magic (1999–2008).

From 2016 to 20 he served as the Detroit Pistons’ associate general manager.

For the third consecutive season, the Notre Dame men’s team missed the NCAA Tournament after finishing 15-18 (8-12 ACC) in 2024–25 under second-year coach Micah Shrewsberry.

Under fifth-year coach Niele Ivey, the women’s team finished 28-6 (16-2 ACC) in the previous season, making it to the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive year.

In addition to budget analysis, income production, fundraising, alumni relations, and facilities management, Garrity’s duties also include creating long-term plans for roster management in the age of transfer portals.

Pete Bevacqua, athletic director, stated, “We are thrilled to have Pat return to Notre Dame.” Given how quickly collegiate athletics are evolving, we realized we needed to find someone who could help Micah and Niele with all that elite basketball teams need off the court while they concentrated on mentoring and helping our incredible student-athletes.

“Being able to bring in someone like Pat, who’s a Notre Dame alumnus, former student-athlete, 10-year NBA veteran, former NBA front office executive and Notre Dame parent, made him the perfect candidate from the start.”
