Even though Ozzie Smith hasn’t participated in a Major League Baseball game in almost thirty years, his influence on the St. Louis Cardinals and the sport is still very much present.

The 70-year-old Hall of Fame shortstop continues to exude the same style, vigor, and insight that won him over fans during his 19-year career. Smith reminded everyone why he is regarded as one of the best defensive defenders in baseball history at a recent “Turn Two with Ozzie” session at Busch Stadium.

Smith quickly tossed the ball behind his back to fellow former major leaguer Scott Cooper after fielding a slow roller close to second base in front of a swarm of young ballplayers and onlookers.

Smith only grinned as the audience burst into awe. It was old Ozzie. Smooth, easy, and memorable.

Smith received a World Series ring with the Cardinals in 1982, 13 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, and 15 All-Star selections throughout his career. Known as “The Wizard,” he finished with a batting average of.262 and recorded 2,460 hits, 793 RBIs, and 580 stolen bases. He retired in 1996 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 on the first ballot.
