Robert Murray, an MLB insider for FanSided, recently compiled a list of potential surprise trades. Murray included Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran as a possible trade chip this season on this list.

The 28-year-old Duran is capable of playing several outfield positions. Murray stated, “He just finished a fantastic season with the Boston Red Sox, hitting.285/.342/.492 with 21 home runs and 75 RBI. He’s hitting.264/.312/.406 this season, with 34 RBI and four home homers. The argument for moving Duran is clear: they would be getting a good deal on Duran and giving baseball’s best prospect, Roman Anthony, a slot in the outfield where he ought to be in the major leagues now.

Murray points out that the San Diego Padres have expressed interest in Duran this season, but the St. Louis Cardinals are among the other teams that would be a good fit for the star.

A Red Sox-Cardinals trade for Jarren Duran might make perfect sense

Right now, the Cardinals find themselves in a bit of a bind. After let many veterans to leave in free agency, they appeared to be about to embark on a major rebuild this season. According to reports, St. Louis also attempted to shop for Nolan Arenado in order to test the market. They have, however, won far more this season than anyone had anticipated.

In order to obtain controllable talent like Duran, the Cardinals may have to trade away expiring guys like Ryan Helsley. Helsley and a few prospects may be traded for Duran, which would be the greatest deal for both teams.

Murray says the premise is straightforward for the Red Sox. Duran still has several years of team control left on his contract, so they would be selling him for a hefty price. The Red Sox would be devastated to lose him, but they may receive a huge haul in exchange, lead by Ryan Helsley of the Cardinals.

Adding Jarren Duran would be expensive but forward-thinking

In order to get Duran, the Cardinals might offer Helsley starter pitcher Erick Fedde along with other highly regarded prospects. To acquire the gifted outfielder, St. Louis may also include a quality pitching prospect, such as Quinn Mathews or Tink Hence, in the trade. Although acquiring Duran would seem like a lot, it would be a huge step forward for the Cardinals.
