They say that when it rains, it pours. The Toronto Blue Jays’ 10-9 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals taught them that lesson directly. The Redbirds lost utility player Brendan Donovan to injury, which further contributed to their defeat.

Because of “left toe discomfort,” Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Donovan was taken out of the game in the ninth inning. Although it’s unknown how serious the situation is, the 28-year-old has been one of the Cardinals’ most reliable hitters this season, so his condition is worth keeping an eye on. In the following session, Yohel Pozo was the pinch hitter after Ryan Vilade took his spot in left field.

Cardinals standout Brendan Donovan suffers toe injury in loss to Blue Jays

It’s unclear how or when Donovan was injured. Though the pitch didn’t appear to go close to his toe, Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt famously struck him with a curveball that was traveling at 71 miles per hour. Apart from that, it’s difficult to think of another instance throughout the competition where he may have been injured.

Could the situation have been made worse by Alec Burleson singled a few of batters after being hit by Bassitt and then rounding third? Donovan only ever got on base once, after all. Therefore, other from a rare accident, there aren’t many other options unless anything happened when he was manning left field.

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol stated during the game that Donovan had been dealing with “irritation in the joint of his left big toe for an extended period.” According to John Denton of MLB.com, St. Louis “hopes” to have further details on Wednesday.
