The Boston Red Sox can secure their first postseason participation since 2021 with only one more win. Now they may receive an unexpected gift in the shape of one of their rookie stats returning from injury.

According to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, Sox youngster Marcelo Mayer has begun baseball practices and may be able to return in the postseason.

Red Sox' Marcelo Mayer focused on returning this season

Marcelo Mayer is no longer wearing his brace and has resumed baseball activities. “He’s been playing catch and started taking dry swings yesterday,” Cerullo wrote.

Cerullo also included a remark from Sox manager Alex Cora, who was the one who mentioned Mayer’s potential comeback. “Interestingly, Alex Cora did not rule out the prospect of a comeback. “I bet he is pushing,” Cerullo wrote.

Mayer was just cutting. He went 228/.272/.402/.674 with four home runs in 44 games, but it appeared like he was figuring things out at the end. If a bat like his can enter the Sox lineup, which is prone to streakiness, it would bode well for a possible postseason run.

Hopefully, Mayer will return soon, along with his friend and fellow Big Three member, Roman Anthony. When both of them return, the Sox will be a force to be reckoned with.
