The Mets are not accustomed to being in this situation throughout the offseason.
Two important players have left New York in the past week: three-time All-Star reliever Edwin DÃaz signed with the Dodgers, and Pete Alonso left for the Orioles in free agency. The Mets are scrambling to put together a squad that will contend in the NL East, despite the fact that they allegedly did not give Alonso a deal.
The Athletic reports that the Mets and Padres are negotiating a trade that would support their respective objectives. The Padres are apparently attempting to cut costs while expanding their pitching staff, while the Mets want to surround slugger Juan Soto with talent in their order.
According to The Athletic, Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor are not involved in these trade negotiations. However, outfielder Ramón Laureano, right-handed starting pitcher Nick Pivetta, and relief pitchers Mason Miller, Adrián Morejón, and Jeremiah Estrada are reportedly on the Mets’ radar.
According to reports, the Padres are seeking young pitchers like Nolan McLean, Brandon Sproat, and Jonah Tong who have a lot of team control left on their contracts.
Here are some details about each of those players that the Mets are allegedly pursuing:
RHP Nick Pivetta

2025 stats
- 31 games (31 starts), 13–5, 2.87 ERA, 0.985 WHIP, 9.4 K/9
Pivetta just had the best season of his career, and it wasn’t even close. Pivetta recorded 19 quality starts, a 2.87 ERA, and 190 strikeouts in 31 starts for the Padres. He had a career 4.76 ERA in 1,029 1/3 innings pitched for the Red Sox (2020–24) and the Phillies (2017–20) going into the 2025 season. The largest distinction? After placing in the 45th percentile for fastball run value in 2024, he was in the 98th percentile.
OF Ramón Laureano
2025 stats (for Padres and Orioles)
- 132 games, .281/.342/.512 slash line, 24 homers, 76 RBIs
Laureano is another player that is nearing the end of his career. The 31-year-old tied a career best in home runs (24) and recorded a career-high OPS+ of 136. Laureano’s club option for the 2026 season was exercised by the Padres at a cost of $6.5 million. Next winter, he will be a free agent.
RHP Mason Miller
2025 stats (for A’s and Padres)
- 60 games, 61 2/3 IP, 2.63 ERA, 0.908 WHIP, 15.2 K/9
Miller, one of baseball’s most explosive arms, came to San Diego in a huge trade with the A’s before the deadline. Miller, a flamethrowig with an average fastball speed of 101.2 mph, joined the Padres’ bullpen, which already included All-Star closer Robert Suarez. In 22 appearances during the regular season, he gave up just two earned runs; in 2 2/3 innings of postseason ball, he also gave up no runs.
LHP Adrián Morejón
2025 stats
- 75 games, 73 2/3 IP, 2.08 ERA, 0.896 WHIP, 8.6 K/9
Morejón would be a significant addition to the Mets’ bullpen, much like Miller. Last season, the lefthander struck out 70 batters in 73 2/3 innings and contributed three saves to win his first career All-Star selection.
RHP Jeremiah Estrada
2025 stats
- 77 games, 73 IP, 3.45 ERA, 1.164 WHIP, 13.3 K/9
Estrada, who the Padres claimed off waivers prior to the 2024 season, has developed over the past two years. In 2024 and 2025, he made 139 appearances for San Diego, recording a 3.22 ERA and struck out 202 batters in 134 innings.
