It looked like the New York Mets would have a slow offseason, but things soon heated up. Bo Bichette was a guy the Philadelphia Phillies thought they were close to signing, but New York made a surprise agreement with him. Shortly after the Mets lost out on Kyle Tucker, the deal was reached.

“After failing to sign Kyle Tucker, the New York Mets quickly changed course and agreed to a three-year, $126 million contract with infielder Bo Bichette, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday,” Jorge Castillo of ESPN wrote.
Luis Robert Jr. was acquired from the Chicago White Sox by New York, further bolstering their outfield. The acquisition showed that the Mets were not willing to sit back and gave Juan Soto a new power bat to join him in the lineup.
As they restructure their squad following a disappointing 2025, ESPN’s Jeff Passan noted, “The New York Mets acquired center fielder Luis Robert Jr. in a trade with the Chicago White Sox late Tuesday, adding a strong defensive presence with a high-upside offensive game.”
The Mets might not be done adding talent, though. Mark Powell of FanSided thinks that New York might try to acquire Byron Buxton, a seasoned outfielder.
The hitting order needs to have as much firepower as possible, much like the Phillies. The Mets had a poor 2025 campaign, missed the MLB postseason, and now need to figure out how to compete in 2026. The Mets need to replace Pete Alonso’s bat after making a major offseason acquisition in Juan Soto. Powell remarked, “Buxton seems like the ideal choice.
After their poor performance the previous season, the Mets are obviously trying to improve. New York has been aggressive in replacing that production, whether it is by adding power to the lineup or upgrading the pitching, since a number of important free players have left.
Buxton would be a significant addition, possibly providing the Mets with three middle-of-the-order hitters that are very dependable. Given how aggressive New York has been this offseason, there’s little reason to think they wouldn’t look into closing a deal if the chance to acquire Buxton arose.
