The Kansas State Wildcats continued its momentum on the recruiting trail as defensive tackle Dawayne Jones officially pledged his commitment to the program. The Tulsa (Oklahoma)-area standout announced his decision on February 22, adding a key piece to Head Coach Collin Klein’s 2027 recruiting class.

Jones, a strong and versatile defensive lineman from Booker T. Washington High School, brings an impressive blend of size, athleticism and production to the Wildcats’ front. Standing roughly 6-foot-2 and around 240 pounds, he’s garnered attention from a wide array of Power Five programs before landing with Kansas State, including offers from the likes of Oklahoma State, LSU, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Arizona.
The recruitment of Jones was a long-standing priority for K-State, with ties extending back to former staff and into the current regime. A family connection to Manhattan helped the Wildcats make their pitch: Jones’ brother, Wayne Jones, played at Kansas State during a period that overlapped with Klein’s time as offensive coordinator. That familiarity, coupled with strong relationships with Defensive Line Coach Buddy Wyatt and the rest of the K-State staff, gave Kansas State an edge in a crowded field.
Jones’ commitment bolsters a defensive class that is already drawing positive industry attention. Known for his explosive first-step and high motor, he’s expected to compete early once on campus and contribute immediately to a defensive front that’s being reshaped under Klein’s leadership. The addition also signals Kansas State’s continued ability to attract impact players in the trenches — a key factor for success in the rugged Big 12 Conference.
As Jones prepares for the next step in his football career, Wildcats fans have reason to be encouraged about the future of K-State’s defense.
