During Saturday’s game versus Florida at Rupp Arena, legendary ESPN college basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale voiced his opinions about the University of Kentucky basketball program.

It took just over 12 minutes for Vitale to express his dissatisfaction with Kentucky and its roster composition under head coach Mark Pope with $22 million in NIL spending, despite the fact that No. 4 Florida won the game 84-77.

“I’m going to say this right here,” Vitale explained to Karl Ravech and Jimmy Dykes on the ESPN broadcast. “I’ve done several now Kentucky games. Win or lose, $22 million this team [reportedly has spent] in terms of the NIL for their players. I think in $22 million, they could have put together a better roster than they did. I really do.”

Vitale made it apparent that moral victories are unacceptable for Kentucky, an eight-time national champion, with 1:46 left in the second half.

Vitale said, “I’ll tell you one thing.” You don’t want to leave this place believing that you have won morally. At this level of basketball, moral triumphs are meaningless. And some of them say, “We played them close.” We played them hard. In the end, you are Kentucky. You’re from Kentucky. And, especially at home, you must come out on top. Moral triumphs do not exist. Come on. That’s not what I want to hear.

Kentucky has lost five of its previous seven games and is currently 19-12 overall and 10-8 in SEC play. The Wildcats were ranked No. 27 on the NET rankings going into Saturday, and they are now at No. 27 on Ken Pomeroy’s efficiency ratings. After serving in the same capacity at BYU, Pope guided Kentucky to the Sweet 16 in his debut season as head coach last year.
