After throwing in the World Baseball Classic for his native country, a pitcher of Colombian descent declared his retirement from baseball.

After Colombia defeated Panama 4-3 in the teams’ final WBC match on March 9, Julio Teheran, 35, announced reporters he was hanging up his cleats.

Since making one start with the New York Mets in 2024 and giving up four runs in 2.2 innings, Teheran had not pitched in Major League Baseball. He played with the Mexican League’s Toros de Tijuana past season, going 4-3 with a 6.95 ERA in 14 games (12 starts).

Teheran was supposed to pitch in Pool Play on March 7, but before the warm-up, he complained of shoulder pain. As a result, he did not pitch in the 2026 WBC.

Teheran, a 13-year MLB veteran, was named a National League All-Star with the Atlanta Braves in 2014 and 2016. He plays for the Braves (2011–19), Los Angeles Angels (2020), Detroit Tigers (2021), Milwaukee Brewers (2023), and Mets before retiring with an 81-82 record and a 3.85 ERA in 255 games (248 starts).

In the 2017 WBC, Teheran won his lone start for Colombia.

When Teheran made his National League debut in 2011 at the age of 20, he was the youngest pitcher on the team, which also included future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones, Jason Heyward, Brian McCann, and fellow rookies Freddie Freeman.

With a longer resume than most, he will now pursue his post-playing career.
