Kenny Walker

Goose Givens wondered if this team really thought they could win after the Florida game. That’s terrible enough, but Kenny Walker, another legend from Kentucky, feels that something needs to happen. Under Mark Pope, Kentucky runs the possibility of being “UCLA and Indiana” otherwise.

“The talent was present, but the number of injuries increased.” In an interview with Larry Vaught, Walker stated, “I believe that got into coach Pope’s head.” “He had to play a lot of guys he was not ready to play… I think they got frustrated and confused and just have not been sure about their roles.”

The “confusion” factor: Trent Noah and Andrija Jelavic

Walker’s assessment highlights the season’s most annoying aspect. After going from being a starter to a guy who never saw the court, Trent Noah returned all of a sudden. After missing two weeks of action, Andrija Jelavic abruptly returned to the starting lineup. Players don’t develop or maintain their self-confidence when they are confused like that.

Walker didn’t think he was prepared for the spotlight, but even Malachi Moreno was thrust into it. “I really did not think he would play much, and now he is the best big guy we have,” said Walker. The decline of Brandon Garrison, who ought to be better in his second year at Lexington, is startling, even though Moreno has been a bright spot.

Moreno averages 7.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game in SEC contests. Brandon Garrison, a junior, averages four rebounds, an assist, and 3.8 points a game. He should not be outperforming a junior McDonald’s All-American, yet he is.

The recruiting crisis: “We are turning into UCLA”

Walker claims that Pope’s incapacity to close on major recruits is the main problem. He cautions that Kentucky can no longer just market “history and tradition.”

“If we continue in that manner, we will become Indiana and UCLA. Other elite schools are assembling individuals to serve as general managers, manage finances, and recruit in order to acquire a top player.”

The case for a general manager

It’s true that everyone thinks Kentucky should hire a general manager. The crucial choices that determine a squad would be better left to a general manager.

Think about the decision between Jayden Quaintance and Yaxel Lendeborg. One was an excellent talent disabled by a severe knee injury; the other was a healthy, established celebrity. In a game where 11 minutes define your season, these are the choices that count. It is evident that Mark Pope is a coach who has never recruited at this level of college basketball.

Is a shakeup coming?

It’s not just a general manager; as I’ve already stated, the entire coaching staff is in dire need of a makeover. The position of “Associate Director of Player Development” was just advertised by Kentucky on Sunday. Will it be sufficient to respond to Kenny Walker’s wake-up call? It’s a start.

Or will Kentucky become Indiana?
