Mark Pope was aware that he would have to find a front office position in order to continue. Keegan Brown is a skilled roster builder even if he isn’t a full-fledged general manager. However, he is running out of time to finish it.
Brown has formally agreed to take on the role of Director of Roster Management for the program.
Brown and Pope are getting back together to add another perspective to roster construction after Brown spent the previous two years with the Wisconsin Herd of the NBA G League. After signing the contract, Brown remarked, “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join a historic program like Kentucky basketball.”I’m thrilled to work with Coach Pope and the staff to create a roster that reflects the unparalleled legacy, standards, and expectations here.”

It’s a great opening quotation. However, it must be more than simply words. Here in Lexington, there is a standard that is unmatched anywhere. You also need to find players who consistently perform at that level.
However, Brown has very little time to settle into his new workplace due to the harsh realities of the job.
The clock is already ticking
Kenny Brooks dubbed the current collegiate basketball offseason “speed dating” because of its fast-paced nature. Brown is boarding a fast-moving train when the NCAA Transfer Portal formally opens on April 7. This week, crucial stay-or-go roster meetings are being held to decide who will return and who will depart. Although the outcome of those discussions may not be known until later, Brown’s presence at least allows him to participate in the discussion.
He must start working on such assessments right away, calculate the NIL cap figures, and create prediction models for the returning players. However, he will soon need to start developing an offensive strategy for the open market and incoming players.
Navigating a sudden coaching vacuum
The fact that Brown is beginning his tenure with a shortage of personnel makes the job even more challenging. Jason Hart moved away from Lexington to work at SMU. Brown will have to take on a significant amount of the front-office workload until Pope formally chooses Hart’s replacement and resolves the expiring contracts of his other assistants. However, he was aware of that before entering, so there’s probably already a strategy in place for that.
Brown was expressly brought in to stop the Cats from having just one point guard due to another roster breakdown. Making ensuring the parts fit together this season will be another crucial component. This roster must include both shot makers and creators.
Brown’s capacity to perform well under pressure is going to be put to the test because the portal will open in only 12 days and the bench is still in scramble mode.
