Pearl went on a brief tirade about North Carolina firing Hubert Davis after five years on Thursday night during CBS’s NCAA Tournament coverage, casting doubt on the Tar Heels’ commitment to a former player and graduate.

“I just hate hearing the words ‘Hubert Davis was fired at UNC,'” Pearl stated. “I’m sitting here, gentlemen, because that statement really upsets me. I’m sitting here in part because of it. because allegiance has vanished.”

Some people interpreted Pearl’s remarks as a jab at Auburn, his previous employer.

Bruce Pearl still has problems with Tennessee’s lack of loyalty to him

Pearl quickly declared those charges to be untrue.

He stated on The Next Round, “There were some in the media that took my comments to say that I was complaining about Auburn’s loyalty to me, and nothing could be farther from the truth.” You could critique me in a variety of ways, so that really got to me. I understand that I’m a major target. However, Auburn showed me loyalty when others did not. Throughout my career, I remained devoted to Auburn.

Pearl has a valid point because it was Jay Jacobs, the athletic director at Auburn at the time, who took a risk on him after he was sacked from Tennessee for NCAA infractions. Pearl seemed to still harbor some animosity toward Knoxville residents.

He stated, “I had a situation at Tennessee where Tennessee was definitely not loyal to me.” Additionally, I was devoted to Tennessee. I had numerous chances to leave Tennessee in search of better jobs and more money. I didn’t. I erred. Although Tennessee did not have to terminate me, they did after I accepted responsibility for my error.

Bruce Pearl finds job as analyst despite ESPN host's 'hope' he was 'pushed out' of Auburn for being 'divisive'

However, Pearl has exploited his position during March Madness to remind us of the reasons he is so divisive. He began by claiming that Miami (OH) didn’t deserve a spot to the NCAA Tournament if the RedHawks didn’t win their conference tournament, even though they went unbeaten during the regular season. It was perceived as an attempt at mid-majors as well as a ruse to secure a position in the tournament for Auburn, which is currently coached by Pearl’s son, Steven.

People will be listening to everything Pearl says since the NCAA Tournament is still two weeks away.
