After witnessing their season collapse in 2025, the New York Mets are hoping to turn things around in 2026. From being the greatest club in Major League Baseball, the Mets were eliminated from the playoffs. The organization didn’t look good; it was in disarray.

Jacob deGrom will take on the New York Mets, who have lost six straight games and are now 6-0. The Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins, and Nationals, after starting 45-24 and having the best record in MLB. It’s not a collapse. Jeff Passan of ESPN wrote, “It’s a disintegration.”

After using so many arms in 2025, the Mets put a lot of effort into improving their pitching this offseason. They were able to acquire Freddy Peralta, a well-known player who is anticipated to be their star in 2026.

“The New York Mets acquired All-Star Freddy Peralta and fellow right-hander Tobias Myers from the Milwaukee Brewers for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, two of their top prospects, late Wednesday, ending their winterlong pursuit of a front-line starting pitcher,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.

Further deals are still possible, and Lucas Giolito, who is still unsigned, is one player to keep an eye on.

Instead, Giolito might end up with a Braves opponent in the NL East division. It seems like the New York Mets would benefit from having a seasoned player in the middle of their rotation. The Mets may be searching for an arm to just keep them in games because they have a potent attack led by slugger Juan Soto. The Mets are more likely to be able to splurge for Giolito if necessary because they are in a larger market, particularly after Pete Alonso left. Giolito is a high-risk, high-reward free agent, and the Mets want to take a chance on him, according to Austin Owens of FanSided.

It won’t be simple, but the Mets want to win the NL East for the first time in a number of years. Throughout the season, they must perform better than both the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Giolito would offer New York an additional arm and add significant rotation depth. The Mets already have one of the strongest lineups in baseball, and their pitching, where depth is always crucial, will ultimately determine how successful they are.
