Everyone, it’s Transfer Portal eve, which means Kentucky is preparing for yet another significant roster makeover. March Madness will continue through the month of April, with players coming and going. Don’t get it wrong, though; the Cats are still hoping to improve their high school recruiting situation after 2026.
A 5-star power forward in 2027, is being actively pursued by Kentucky basketball.
Mark Pope is pursuing the kid of another former star after receiving his first pledge in 2026 with Mason, the son of Mo Williams.
At least thus far, Kentucky men’s basketball’s 2026 recruiting cycle has been a bit of a flop. The Cats currently only have 4-star point guard Mason Williams on the team, but there are still some huge prizes out there, including Tyran Stokes or overseas talents like Miikka Muurinen or Eric Del Castillo.
Mark Pope is working hard to find a solution, but he also recognizes that hiring takes several years. He and the crew are in continuous communication with Dawson Battie because of this. Battie, a top-15 player in the nation in the 2027 class, paid a visit during Big Blue Madness last year.
Basketball is in Dawson Battie’s blood
Those who have followed basketball for a long time will recognize that last name rather fast. Dawson’s father, Derrick, played four years at Temple, and his uncle, Tony Battie, was selected in the top five of the NBA Draft.
Through a challenging process, that connection to the game provides genuine mentoring. Indeed, NIL has altered the financial landscape. But players still have to navigate a process of college selection. Relationship building is crucial because people will make promises to them that they are unable to fulfill.
After two years of disappointing recruiting performance, major recruiters Alvin Brooks III and Jason Hart were permitted to depart, leaving Kentucky’s staff essentially completely new.
As a result, Kentucky will have an opportunity to start over with the entire 2027 class. And Kentucky cannot afford to let this opportunity pass it by.
Although high school recruiting isn’t the ultimate goal, it can be disappointing to see a recruit decide to join a another team after spending a lot of money and effort on them.
The capacity of Mark Pope to close on elite recruits was his biggest weakness, and he hasn’t done much to address it. This offseason is crucial because of this. On April 5, 2027, Kentucky cannot afford to have just one recruit. Perhaps Battie will be the first of many.
