What was supposed to be a return-focused weekend has been completely turned upside down. As part of his rehab assignment for Triple-A, Jorge Polanco, who was supposed to return to the Mets for this weekend’s series against the Padres, will stay with the Syracuse Mets, as first reported by Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Due to a right Achilles strain that has kept him out of action since April 14, Polanco is gradually recovering and is anticipated to participate this season despite his suffering. The former Mariner signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Mets after President of Baseball Operations David Stearns brought him in to play first base for the first time in his career.

Despite managing through the injury that happened during the second game of the season, his 14-game sample size was unimpressive, batting.179 with a.532 OPS. With two hits through ten at-bats, including a three-run home run, his rehabilitation output has so far appeared promising.

The Mets will probably have to make due with the players on their roster for the time being.

What the Mets can expect without Jorge Polanco’s return this weekend

The Mets have just two choices: Either start with Mark Vientos or switch to Jared Young, who started on Thursday and went 2-for-5. Through 53 games, Vientos has put up a lackluster performance, striking out 42 times while batting.219 with a.634 OPS. His on-field performance has been much worse, as he has made mistakes that no major league player should be making.

“I’ve got to give myself a little bit of props because last month, just a lot of bad luck,” Vientos said via SNY TV following his performance Wednesday—where he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout while making a costly error. “The inconsistency is not something that I want. Trying my best to be the best version of myself right now.  It’s not happening, but I’m working for it for sure.”

Over the past 20 games, Vientos has been in a terrible slump, hitting 14-for-74 (.189 BA) with 15 strikeouts and having an on-base percentage of only.211. Young currently offers the Mets their best opportunity to produce. The seasoned lefty has a.333 OBP and a.965 OPS over the last five games, going 5-for-19 with two home runs and three RBIs.

Although Polanco’s return isn’t anticipated this weekend, it will undoubtedly happen soon as he continues his rehabilitation in the minor leagues alongside Francisco Alvarez and Kodai Senga.
