Investing in a free agent pitcher is a low-risk move for the Philadelphia Phillies.

According to Ari Alexander of 7News Boston, they signed right-hander Levi Stoudt on Tuesday.

The Baltimore Orioles were Stoudt’s most recent team.

The Seattle Mariners selected the 28-year-old, 6-foot-1 righty in the third round of the 2019 draft.

Early in his career, he had Tommy John surgery, which hindered his progress.

In 2022, the Reds acquired Stoudt from the Mariners in exchange for Luis Castillo.

In his 2023 MLB debut, he pitched 10.1 innings and allowed 11 runs.

In 2024, the Orioles claimed him after the Mariners waived him after taking him back with a waiver claim.

Stoudt’s minor league ERA over the past two seasons is 5.83.

He has consistently walked a couple too many players and has never quite struck out enough.

That’s obviously not the best combo.

However, Stoudt has had supporters throughout his career, and the Phillies are the most recent to provide him an opportunity.

It’s nearly a given that he will start the season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but it’s a contract and a chance to continue his baseball career, and Stoudt will attempt to accomplish exactly that while attempting to get another call-up to the major leagues.
