After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs in October, the Philadelphia Phillies were devastated. The Phillies know they want to return after making it to the World Series in 2022, which is why this summer is so important. Before Bo Bichette signed with the NL East rival New York Mets, Philadelphia’s situation almost came together.

After failing to acquire Kyle Tucker, the New York Mets quickly changed course and agreed to a three-year, $126 million contract with infielder Bo Bichette, sources told ESPN on Friday. Player opt-out clauses following the first and second seasons are part of the agreement, which is pending a physical. The contract has a straight average annual value of $42 million because it does not include any deferred money, according to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo.
It hurt even more to miss out on Bichette since Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski thought a deal with him was near.
“I did believe that a deal would be reached…It was a stomach punch since we were so close. However, you don’t have an agreement until you have a signed memorandum of understanding, according to Dombrowski.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report thinks the Phillies make a change by signing Eugenio Suárez to fill the hot corner as the offseason seems to be coming to an end.
Bo Bichette was a free agent, but the Phillies were unable to sign him. The fact that he, Freddy Peralta, and Luis Robert Jr. joined the New York Mets so quickly only made matters worse. The Phillies are under pressure to respond, and acquiring Suárez is possibly their best option. He is among the top pure power hitters in the game, so a matchup between him and Citizens Bank Park would seem ideal, Rymer noted.
The Phillies could compensate for missing out on a highly sought-after free agent who appeared to be headed for Philadelphia. Suárez would offer a seasoned hitter who could instantly win over Citizens Bank Park’s supporters.
Suárez would be a definite improvement over Alec Bohm, and Philadelphia is eager to make it back to the World Series. This kind of action may also indicate that the Phillies are prepared to consider dealing Bohm as they continue to rebuild their squad.
