Head coach Mark Pope is in a perilous situation after a group that appeared deadly on paper failed to gel and had an excruciatingly early NCAA Tournament elimination. The enormous NIL monies that drove last year’s portal spending binge won’t be available this offseason, as Kentucky icon Jack “Goose” Givens recently cautioned.

These three guys are just too expensive for Kentucky to bring back for the upcoming campaign.
Brandon Garrison is the talent doesn’t match the production
The bursts of brilliance are undeniable. Against Santa Clara, Garrison had his pivotal moment, recording six blocks and making pivotal, game-winning plays. He has all the athletic prowess in the world and was a previous McDonald’s All-American. However, a player who finds it difficult to maintain regular engagement cannot be the foundation of a championship contender. Simply put, you can’t rely on Garrison every time he on the court. Players that are absent for extended periods of time are not worth carrying. Regression is depicted in the numbers. His output drastically decreased in Lexington after averaging 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in his first year at Oklahoma State. He saw his minutes decline this season and averaged just 4.8 points and 4.0 rebounds.The portal contains components that are more appropriate for Mark Pope’s system. Garrison had his moments, but his consistency was insufficient.
Jaland Lowe brings too much risk in a physical SEC
This one is just a result of physical constraints and bad luck. Due to a persistent shoulder injury sustained during the blue-white game, Lowe’s career at Kentucky never really took off.
He only played in nine games, averaging 18.6 minutes and 8.0 points per game, so there wasn’t enough high-level output to make up for the significant injury risk he carries. It takes complete durability to play as a smaller guard in a conference that is physically demanding and brutal by nature, like the SEC. Regretfully, Kentucky is unable to commit a precious scholarship place to a guard who is unable to play.
Trent Noah is the luxury Kentucky can no longer afford
I’m having trouble typing this out. I really think that Trent Noah could be a useful rotation player in the correct offensive scheme. However, Noah is a premium player on a team with a shrinking budget and obvious defensive problems. He’s the type of guy that shows up, gives you a rush of adrenaline and effort, and could even knock down a few shots. However, in the end, you are unable to retain both Mo Dioubate and Noah. Dioubate’s defensive versatility outweighs Noah’s spot-up skills in crucial late-game situations, especially considering how infrequently Noah entered the game. When it mattered most, the coaching staff had very little faith in him.He played 0 minutes in the NCAA Tournament and only two minutes in the SEC Tournament. If he is going to be stuck on the bench in March, there is absolutely no reason to bring him back, and to be honest, he probably wants a chance to play somewhere else.
The core moving forward
Mark Pope appears to get a glimpse of the basis he wishes to expand upon, despite his displeasure. Pope gave a hint about the future in his remarks following the devastating defeat to Iowa State.”You consider that you’re starting a sophomore two-guard, a first-year center, and a first-year power forward,” Pope thought. “It wasn’t the plan going into the season, but that’s what we ended up with, and those guys have gained some great experience, and they’re going to get better and better.” We’ll begin there and gradually expand from there.”
By reading between the lines, Pope has determined that Malachi Moreno and Collin Chandler are his core. Everything else on this roster needs to be on the table once those fundamental pieces are secured.
