Mark Pope will make every effort this offseason to ensure that the Kentucky Wildcats have top-notch players and depth at the point guard position. He was sidelined for the entire season prior to SEC play due to a foot injury, and Lamont Butler was in and out of the lineup due to a shoulder injury in the first year of the Pope administration.

Due to a shoulder injury, Jaland Lowe was the Kentucky Wildcats’ sole real point guard this season. Despite being more at ease at the two positions, Denzel Aberdeen and Jasper Johnson were forced to assume the role of point guard for this club.

For these reasons, Pope must ensure that the Kentucky basketball team in 2026–2027 has a large number of point guards who can both play at a high level and maintain their health. Mason Williams is a point guard committed to the Wildcats in 2026, but the staff will need to add two other point guards to the squad.

A former Pope signee is one player on the transfer portal that the Wildcats might consider. After a tremendous rookie season at Villanova, Acaden Lewis said today that he intends to visit the portal when it opens on the 7th. In each game, he averaged 12.2 points, 5.3 assists, three rebounds, and 1.9 steals. Lewis made 27% of his three-pointers and 45.6% of his field goals.

Lewis was going to be a Wildcat, but he started seeking for a new home once Kentucky signed Lowe, who has already stated that he will return to Lexington. He attracted attention for the Villanova Wildcats and is eager to advance his abilities.

Lewis was obviously a terrific match for Coach Pope’s system at one point, and I don’t think that has altered following his recent freshman season at Villanova. Pope may not visit, but when the door opens on Tuesday, keep an eye on this name.
