In the middle of transfer portal madness, Kentucky was able to take a much-needed break after Zoom Diallo committed to the point guard position. Without a doubt, Mark Pope should be commended for effectively resolving his largest issue from the previous season.
Nevertheless, the excitement surrounding that achievement has since subsided in favor of the Cats’ revised target list. The most prominent of them is Donnie Freeman, with whom Kentucky appears to have solid relations despite his departure from Lexington earlier this week without making a commitment.
Jeff Goodman even went so far as to publicly speculate on X about Freeman’s final destination in another recent round of encouraging news. We might be in for some good news, Big Blue Nation.
Making an Educated Guess
In what he refers to as a “educated guess,” Goodman predicted that Freeman would play for Kentucky and Nik Khamenia would play for UConn. For Cats supporters, this is double wonderful news because Freeman was originally scheduled to play at UConn after visiting Lexington. Interestingly, that visit has since been canceled.
Kentucky’s chances undoubtedly improved after the Huskies appeared to withdraw from the contest, even though Alabama remains a possible bidder for Freeman. Now, it’s a matchup between Nate Oats and Mark Pope for possibly the greatest forward on the portal.
We’ve seen this battle before, although the circumstances were a measure different.
Enthusiastic Cats supporters will recall that the recruiting of Jasper Johnson also depended on the Wildcats and the Crimson Tide, with Kentucky emerging victorious in what appeared to be a significant upset at the time. Pope has won in this area previously, regardless of how that one turned out.
Freeman would be securing the ideal stretch four for an offensive scheme that benefits from having a player like him.
A Potential Perfect Piece
In his most recent season with Syracuse, Freeman led the Orange as an obvious high-major prospect from the start, scoring 16.5 points and grabbing seven rebounds per game. The forward looks ready to jump into more NBA Draft attention as he enters his junior year.
He would undoubtedly have an impact wherever he plays, and when combined with the previously stated Diallo, they would provide Kentucky with the best start possible in the portal.
The Wildcats are more than aware of Freeman’s situation, but the case is far from over. Pope must go above and above in order to close on this target of his.
