Once again, Kentucky basketball is being scrutinized, and Kyle Tucker claims that this attention is spreading throughout college basketball.

During his appearance on Matt Jones’ Uninterrupted on Thursday, Tucker disclosed that CEOs and other collegiate basketball schools are making fun of Kentucky and head coach Mark Pope.

“They are,” Tucker says on Uninterrupted by Matt Jones. “I mean, yeah, I think just in some certain circles, yeah. I talked to some coaches that there are jokes being made, I mean. I’ve talked to a couple GMs. I still have a Lexington phone number. I’ve talked to a couple GMs, and when they answer the phone, and they go, ‘I thought Mark Pope was finally calling realizing he needed a GM and I was going to have to go to my boss and ask for more money.’ You know, I mean, like there, I think there’s a lot of it’s like, it’s not just like straight up making fun, but it’s more like, I don’t, you know, guys saying like, ‘I’m not sure what they’re doing. I’m not sure what they’re trying to accomplish.’

Tucker underscored a recurring sense of uncertainty about Kentucky’s future, even though he clarified that not all of the conversation is open mocking.

Will BYU head coach Mark Pope be in the mix for the Kentucky job?

A large portion of that uncertainty is related to roster formation. Tucker questioned the lack of shooting and general fit of the guard signings made by the Wildcats. Additionally, he brought up the recruiting of well-known targets like Donnie Freeman, implying that Kentucky may have mishandled opportunities in the process.

The roster from the previous season is also under fire. Despite having an estimated $22 million roster and substantial NIL resources, Tucker called the group “ill-fitting,” claiming it didn’t fit Pope’s ideal system.

Tucker anticipates that the next two to four weeks will be crucial. With the No. 1 overall player Tyran Stokes and other great targets still available from the transfer portal to high school, Kentucky’s ability to sign a game-changing talent could determine the course of the program.

Tucker remarked, “I do not see a way that he saves it if he gets neither of those things.”

It looks like Pope’s third season in Lexington will be crucial.
