This offseason, Mark Pope has been heavily covered by the national media. Other programs are making fun about Kentucky’s recruiting practices because you have some leaking information. Others are openly doubting your plan. And now someone is claiming that Mark Pope’s roster might be among the weakest in the SEC.

Mark Pope’s most recent squad makeover is nearly complete, with just two roster spaces left as May approaches. The Wildcats are facing a roster that isn’t as talented as what Kentucky has been used to after a dismal run of high-profile recruiting misses, including Tyran Stokes to Kansas.

One well-known observer claims that Kentucky is falling behind practically the entire conference in addition to lacking star power.

Mark Pope had a message for BBN following loss to Missouri

When assessing Pope’s program’s current situation, Aaron Gershon did not hold back. Gershon presented a dismal image of Kentucky’s current position in the SEC hierarchy in a harsh evaluation of the Wildcats’ offseason performance.

“On paper, Kentucky currently has a roster in the bottom five of the SEC, and it’s almost May,” Gershon said.

He pointed out that Pope must pull a huge rabbit out of his hat late in the game in order to save the offseason. “Is there enough time? It is possible to pull off stunners with some of the cuspy draft men. However, this roster won’t be good enough without those “stunners.”

These “stunners” would probably have to be significant choices made through the NBA Draft portal. Milan Momcilovic of Iowa State and Juke Harris of Wake Forest appear to be the two most likely at the moment. It’s risky to rely on a player’s optimism in late May.

Was the year 1 roster actually better?

Fans challenged Gershon’s critical evaluation by pointing out that Pope advanced to the Sweet 16 with what appeared to be a “worse” group on paper in his rookie season, and the pundit aggressively doubled down.

“I disagree. Gershon retorted, “That roster was better,” citing Pope’s first portal class’s verified college resumes. “Amari [Williams] won three DPOY in CAA, [Andrew] Carr scored in double figures in ACC, [Koby] Brea was a proven elite shooter, [Jaxson] Robinson was the BIG 12 sixth MOY, Lamont [Butler] was a proven PG with multiple DPOY awards and an F4, etc.”

“There’s less proven success on this team” is exactly what he said about the major weakness of the present team.

The main problem is the lack of demonstrated results. Few guys have demonstrated the potential to perform at a truly exceptional level, but some may take a step and truly surprise.

The problem with being a surprise team

Despite what certain stories and posts may lead you to believe, none of these indicates that the season is already ended. Hardwood, not paper, is where basketball is played. The group might surprise everyone by taking the court and fitting in flawlessly with Pope’s offensive scheme.

However, that is the main issue.

The University of Kentucky is located here. The Wildcats should not be starting a season with the intention of “surprising” everyone with how excellent they are. When Kentucky shocks the nation, it should be because they are outperforming top teams by 20 points, not because they have a winning record despite having a roster of players who aren’t as well-known.

Mark Pope’s time at Lexington will be quite brief if his school is forced to play the brave underdog because he is unable to find elite players in the portal or on the recruiting trail.
