Even though it’s just June, there are already rumors circulating in Major League Baseball regarding the possible cost of one of the league’s top prospective free agents.

One of the best players anticipated to enter free agency following the conclusion of the 2026 Major League Baseball season is starter Freddy Peralta of the New York Mets. Peralta is the obvious No. 2 pending free agency starter, but Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers will be the best available free agent this coming offseason.

With a 3.63 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 74 to 30 in 72 innings pitched thus far this season, Peralta has made 13 starts for the Mets. This past summer, he was acquired by the Mets from the Milwaukee Brewers in a huge trade involving utility prospect Jett Williams and pitcher Brandon Sproat. With a 3.59 lifetime ERA in 224 major league games, he has nine years of big league experience. He will greatly improve a team’s rotation wherever he ends up. We now know what kind of deal he’s searching for. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Peralta is seeking a contract comparable to the eight-year, $218 million contract Max Fried earned as a free agent with the New York Yankees.

The Mets Star Will Be Fascinating To Follow

“If a team acquires New York Mets ace Freddy Peralta at the trade deadline and wants to keep him, they better be ready to pay up,” Nightengale wrote. “Peralta will be seeking a free agent contract similar to Max Fried’s eight-year, $218 million deal, according to those familiar with Peralta’s expectations.”

After eight seasons with the Atlanta Braves, Fried signed a long-term contract with the Yankees. He had a 3.07 lifetime ERA at the time and had pitched in 168 major league games. Peralta will have made a lot more appearances by the time he becomes a free agent. With the majority of the 2026 season left, he currently has 224 appearances under his belt, including 175 starts. Although the Yankees lefty has undoubtedly been superior thus far in his career, the Fried comparison isn’t particularly hostile.

Nevertheless, Peralta will be a star for whoever lands him. However, there are some question marks. It’s entirely uncertain what will happen in free agency and the league as a whole after the 2026 season concludes because the collective bargaining agreement between the league and MLBPA is scheduled to expire.
