An eight-year MLB veteran may soon be called back by the Philadelphia Phillies to assist the pitching staff.
On June 17, following yet another terrible start, Philadelphia optioned Painter to Triple-A. One choice could compel the Phillies to make a trade, even though they didn’t announce one.
Bryse Wilson activated his upward mobility clause, which might compel Philadelphia to add him to the 26-man roster, according to Phillies insiders Matt Gelb and Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic.

The story stated, “A league source claims that Bryse Wilson recently triggered an upward mobility clause in his minor-league contract.” If Wilson is not added to the Phillies’ roster, he could be able to find employment with another organization. At Triple A, he has a 12-inning scoreless streak with seven walks and 14 strikeouts. However, in 54 1/3 innings this season, he has a 6.29 ERA. There is a vacancy on the Phillies’ 40-man roster.
The Phillies’ inability to acquire significant pitching depth throughout the offseason is largely to blame for the current problem. Wilson and Tucker Davidson signed minor-league contracts with them. At Triple A, both have had difficulties.
Wilson played for the Atlanta Braves for a portion of four seasons after making his Major League debut in 2018. In addition, he can pitch a few innings out of the bullpen and has pitched for the Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Wilson has a 4.82 ERA and a 20-23 record in 163 games, including 57 starts, during his MLB career.
Phillies Demote Painter
On June 17, following yet another poor start, the Phillies were forced to option Painter to Triple-A.
Painter had been having a lot of difficulties, and Don Mattingly, the interim manager, believed that the change was essential.
Mattingly remarked, “You still have to perform and get people out.” “You enjoy the notion that you’re learning from the big league pitching coach, Wheels, and other seasoned pitchers—all of those things may benefit you. However, you still need to perform.
After the difficult performance, it was discovered that Ralph Head in 1923 was the only Phillies pitcher with a lower ERA than Painter throughout his first 14 career appearances (minimum 50 IP).
Painter believed that he had to rediscover his identity as a pitcher.
“It’s really annoying,” Painter remarked. “It has been so difficult to not be able to achieve your goal of constantly being successful. Fastballs are currently being hit, so it’s kind of leaving them over the middle of the plate. Therefore, I believe we simply need to assess and try to determine who I am as a pitcher at this time.
In 14 games, including 12 starts this season, Painter is 1-8 with a 7.06 ERA.
Philadelphia Has Explored Trade Talks
Wilson’s upward mobility clause was activated, but the Phillies could still look into a deal.
Gelb and Varnes disclosed that the team is looking to trade for a backside starter because there is no timeline for Painter to return to the MLB.
Several league sources claim that the Phillies have contacted teams in recent weeks regarding the availability of specific starting pitchers. Consider swingman types who could serve as extended relievers in the bullpen or as a fifth starter. Any outside acquisition at this time would be challenging because it is June and no team is wanting to lose good starting pitchers at this time of year, according to the story.
The Phillies are in second place for the Wild Card with a record of 40-34.
