Red v Mets

After a 22-11 start, the New York Mets are leading the National League East division and have the greatest start in baseball.

In addition to keeping frontline ace Sean Manaea and homegrown first baseman Pete Alonso on new contracts, the team added All-Star pitcher Clay Holmes and superstar hitter Juan Soto to build on a Cinderella run to the National League Championship Series the previous season.

However, the Mets could be willing to shed some of its auxiliary players after an American League postseason candidate suffered a severe physical setback.

RJ Anderson wrote, “The Boston Red Sox were dealt a major loss on Friday night,” for CBS Sports. “During the second inning, first baseman Triston Casas landed awkwardly on the bag, rupturing his left patellar tendon. Casas had been trying to leg out an infield single before being carried off the field.

The Red Sox have a number of choices for Casas’ replacement. They are determined to move Abraham Toro and Romy González into the position in the near future. However, a trade could be necessary for a longer-term fix, and the Red Sox may be contacting the Mets over veteran first baseman Jon Singleton.

Red Sox' Triston Casas has discouraging update on rib injury

“Singleton would seem to mostly fit the Red Sox’s needs: he’s a lefty hitter who produced league-average offense last year in a platoon role with the Houston Astros,” according to Anderson. “He won’t overtake Pete Alonso anytime soon, for sure. If the Red Sox express interest, it is conceivable that the Mets might be open to shipping him to Boston.

Singleton joined the Mets on a minor league contract in April and if the Red Sox can deal something of more immediate value to Queens, the Mets would certainly be willing to listen to a trade offer.
