The Detroit Tigers scored nine runs in the bottom of the third inning on Monday night after the Boston Red Sox’s utter collapse set the stage. Boston was devastated by Riley Greene’s minor league home run in what turned out to be an 11-0 game.
Tanner Houck recorded yet another historically poor start after failing to complete the frame. But he wasn’t entirely to blame.
Houck would have at least had an opportunity to atone for his mistakes in some way, even though Wilyer Abreu wouldn’t have been able to stem the bleeding by fielding this single cleanly. In Comerica Park, however, Greene’s grounder slid past his glove and all the way to the right field wall.
As the relay throw was only a second away, Greene completed the job by sliding head-first into home plate as Colt Keith and Gleyber Torres came around to score. The Tigers quickly increased their advantage, and the audience exploded.

Prior to it, Houck hit a run on a wild pitch. The Red Sox continued to make mistakes after Greene’s moment.
Trey Sweeney clobbered a three-run homer to make it 9-0 after a fastball struck Dillon Dingler. Houck got a late break while trying to cover first base, but Javy Baez doubled to second base. Gleyber Torres, a former Yankee, took it to his old enemy after another walk with his third RBI of the evening after hitting a two-run home run in the first.
