The Los Angeles Angels are entering a new era following Stan Kroenke’s agreement to purchase the franchise from Arte Moreno, but one major detail has already captured the attention of MLB fans: the future identity of the team.
Kroenke’s arrival has fueled widespread speculation about whether the new ownership group could eventually make significant changes to the franchise, including its branding and connection to the Los Angeles market.
However, there is an important distinction: there is currently no confirmed proposal from Kroenke to rename the Angels. Current reporting indicates that the franchise is expected to retain the Los Angeles Angels name.
That has not stopped fans from debating what a Kroenke-led Angels organization could look like.
A New Era in Anaheim
Kroenke’s agreement to acquire a controlling interest in the Angels is expected to become official in the first quarter of 2027, pending MLB approval and other closing conditions. The reported valuation is approximately $4 billion, which would make it a record MLB franchise sale.
The ownership change ends Moreno’s 23-year run with the organization. During that period, the Angels struggled to maintain postseason success and currently have MLB’s longest active playoff drought.
Kroenke, meanwhile, arrives with an impressive sports portfolio that includes the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids and Arsenal.
That championship history has created enormous expectations among Angels supporters.
Could the Angels Look Completely Different?
While a name change has not been announced, the new ownership group could eventually make major changes to the club’s branding, stadium plans, front office and overall baseball operations.
The Angels’ existing name is already strongly tied to the Southern California market, and recent reporting specifically says the name is expected to remain Los Angeles Angels as Kroenke looks to expand the franchise’s reach beyond Orange County.
For now, however, fans will have to wait before drawing conclusions about what Kroenke ultimately intends to change.
Mike Trout Welcomes the Change
Angels superstar Mike Trout has already expressed excitement about the ownership transition, describing it as a needed “fresh start.” Players and coaches have also reacted positively to the news around the clubhouse.
That optimism could become one of the defining themes of the new era.
For Angels fans, the biggest question is no longer whether Moreno will sell the team — that chapter is effectively coming to an end.
