Sunderland youngster could be on his way to Darlington, with the National League North club reportedly interested in securing the defender on loan as early as this week.

According to The Sunderland Echo, Darlington are keen to bring the 20-year-old center-back on board as they look to strengthen their defensive options for the remainder of the campaign.

He has recently returned to regular action after spending approximately 12 months on the sidelines because of a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. His recovery has allowed him to resume playing for Sunderland’s Under-21 side as he works towards regaining full match fitness.

The young defender has also earned recognition at the senior European level, having been included on Sunderland’s List B for the 2026/27 Europa League campaign. UEFA’s official records list Bell among the club’s eligible young players for the competition.

He has continued to gain valuable experience through Sunderland’s youth fixtures, including appearances in the EFL Trophy against Accrington Stanley and Sheffield Wednesday. Bell was also an unused substitute when the Under-21s played out a 2-2 draw against Arsenal last week.

A potential move to Darlington would provide the center-back with an opportunity to experience regular senior football and accelerate his development following his lengthy injury absence. Playing consistently at a competitive level could prove important as he looks to establish himself beyond Sunderland’s academy setup.

Darlington have already turned to the loan market this season and recently extended defender Hayden Atkinson’s temporary stay from Carlisle United. The Quakers are currently competing in the National League North and have endured a challenging start to the campaign, increasing the need to strengthen their squad.

Although an agreement has yet to be officially confirmed, discussions over Bell’s potential move are understood to be progressing positively, with a deal potentially completed this week.

Sunderland have also allowed several young players to gain experience elsewhere in recent months, with Jaydon Jones, Bayley Hester, and Finlay Holcroft among those sent out on loan to non-league clubs.

If the proposed transfer goes through, Bell would have the chance to rebuild his fitness, gain valuable first-team experience, and continue his development while helping Darlington improve their defensive options.
