LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly has been linked to the Michigan Wolverines job since reports of Jim Harbaugh’s departure for the NFL surfaced.

In a story from LSU Tigers Wire on USA Today, Kelly indicated the he is remaining put at LSU, despite allegations that said he was not a good fit for the culture.

“I’ve been doing this for 30-something years. What’s that, 200 and something dog years? He said, “It’s been a long time, and I still feel that way sometimes.” “This is exactly where I wanted to be. I wanted to be at LSU, and I love being here. I’m not leaving. This is my stop. This is the final stop for the Coach Kelly caravan. And you always say, “He’s just saying that to get the right sound bite, but I don’t have to say anything that will put me in a corner.”

But this is it. This is where I want to be. This is where I hope to coach. I adore it here. I adore the folks. I love the state, and I love the fact that I’m working with an administration, an athletic director in Scott Woodward, and a president in President Tate, who are providing us with the resources we need to graduate champions. So this is where I want to be.

Michigan football: Brian Kelly listed as potential replacement for Jim Harbaugh

LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly has made coaching staff changes this offseason, cementing the fact that he will not be going to the Michigan Wolverines

LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly has promoted quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and wide receiver coach Cortez Hankton to co-offensive coordinators, according to Sports Illustrated.

This move, combined with the hire of Blake Baker as a new defensive coordinator, solidifies Kelly’s decision to stay at LSU.
Kelly guided the Tigers to a 10-win season this year, with Jayden Daniels as their Heisman-winning quarterback. The only thing preventing the Tigers from competing for a national championship was their defense.

LSU ranked 108th in total defense, allowing 416.6 yards per game. Their three losses were due to an average of 28 points allowed per game. They allowed 45 points against the Florida State Seminoles, 55 to the Ole Miss Rebels, and 42 to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

With Alabama head coach Nick Saban gone, Kelly and the Tigers have a chance to compete for the SEC title if their defense improves significantly in 2024.

The Michigan Wolverines already have a head coach in waiting, so they do not need LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly

Following Harbaugh’s departure, many Michigan fans are determined not to repeat their previous mistakes. After Lloyd Carr left in 2007, Michigan hired Rich Rodriguez. They’ve only recently recovered from the blunder of selecting someone unfamiliar with Michigan football.

Rodriguez, who was succeeded by Brady Hoke, won only 15 games at Michigan from 2008 to 2010. This season, Harbaugh won 15 games as Michigan’s head coach.

Michigan fans want offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore to get the position, and it appears that he is the most likely candidate.

Moore was successful as the Michigan Wolverines’ interim head coach, going 4-0 this season. He coached one game at the start of the season when Harbaugh was on a self-imposed suspension for recruiting violations during the COVID year.

Moore won the final three regular-season games after Harbaugh was suspended by the Big Ten for an alleged sign-stealing operation. That featured a victory over Michigan’s fiercest foe, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Kelly may want to avoid the Michigan Wolverines for a variety of reasons, including the possibility of future sanctions. Harbaugh requested immunity in his contract and fired numerous coaches associated with the alleged plot. These actions may hint to Kelly that something is approaching, making his work much more difficult than it needs to be.
