Micah Richards singled out this Newcastle United player.

The former Manchester City and England defender talks about ‘character’ and belief.

Micah Richards singled out Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon for special attention.

Gordon, 21, escaped the wrath of Everton’s owners and fans, who attempted to make the young homegrown winger a scapegoat for the club’s woes.

Eddie Howe is giving the young recruit time to settle and isn’t asking for too much, as he has with so many past Newcastle United signings.

Many people, including some Newcastle fans, wanted to write Anthony Gordon off when he settled in at St. James’ Park.

However, given current Premier League expenditure levels, the £40 million (with £5 million in potential add-ons) appears to be a bargain.

Micah Richards is full of praise for Anthony Gordon’s achievements over the last year, including player of the tournament as England won the under 21s Euros last summer, stunning form for Newcastle United, including ten goals and five assists, and the cherry on top of making his full England debut on Saturday and performing so well.

Who is Anthony Gordon? Age, height, career, position, girlfriend

Micah Richards, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast about Anthony Gordon after his England debut on Saturday:

“A few years ago, when Anthony Gordon was at Everton, things were up and down.

“Everton fans treated him as if… ‘If you want to go, just go.’

“Everyone was talking about him not being worth anywhere near that money (for his transfer price).

“Then he goes to Newcastle to perform.”

“After being named player of the tournament with the England under-21s [when they won the u21 Euros] last year, he just focused on his game with Newcastle United.”

“I believe it deserves a lot of appreciation.

“It conveys character.

“It demonstrates that even in difficult situations, he can overcome them and believe in his abilities.

“I need to give him credit for it.

“To go to a big stage and perform against Brazil, to have the character to do that, I thought fair play.”
