Newcastle United defeated Sheffield United 5-1 at St James’ Park in a match that began with fans paying respect to one of their key players.
Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben called Newcastle United’s pre-match flag show before their win over Sheffield United ‘fantastic’. The two teams walked onto the St James’ Park turf, with fans in the Gallowgate waving Brazilian flags.

The billboard was intended at the Magpies’ Brazilian duo, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, with a message that read, “From Alianca and Rio to Newcastle Upon Tyne, a home away from home.” Joelinton and Bruno are our Brazilian Geordies.

Joelinton recently extended his contract with Newcastle United, while Guimaraes has shined this season, and the club hopes to keep him this summer amid heavy transfer talk. A significant release provision in the Brazilian’s contract means the club would be helpless to reject offers for him if they were triggered; but, as Eddie Howe acknowledged, that clause can only be activated until the end of June.

Guimaraes capped off his pre-match performance with a fantastic goal, converting Anthony Gordon’s deep cross with a diving header beyond Wes Foderingham.

Guimaraes’ goal put the Magpies ahead, and an Alexander Isak penalty just moments later gave them breathing room.

Reuben took to X after the match to applaud the showing, describing it as ‘great’, before writing on the outcome: ‘great second half performance from @NUFC – commiserations to @SheffieldUnited and best of success for the future’.

Newcastle’s victory, combined with Burnley’s late equaliser at Old Trafford, means the Magpies finished the day in seventh place in the Premier League.
