The St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is one name that keeps coming up as league contenders look to enhance with the trade deadline still months away. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the 29-year-old flamethrower has emerged as a major trade prospect and is “likely” to be sold before July 31.

It’s easy to understand why teams like the Phillies and Diamondbacks are circling. Helsley was lights-out last year, saving a National League-best 49 games while compiling a 2.45 ERA and winning NL Reliever of the Year honors. Since taking over as closer in 2022, he has been one of the league’s most powerful back-end arms, combining a fastball that reaches 100 mph with a curveball that becomes sharper every time.

Between 2022 and 2024, Helsley struck out over 35% of hitters he faced, recorded 83 saves, and had a 1.83 ERA. During that time, he had the third-highest ERA, fourth-highest FIP, and eighth-highest strikeout rate among qualifying relievers. He provides exceptional output to clubs in need of bullpen consistency, and his upcoming free agency makes him a timeless trade piece.

Despite rumors that teams like the Blue Jays and D-backs were interested in Helsley, the Cardinals refused to trade him throughout the offseason. However, given their inclination to not extend him on a long-term basis and their dismal 12–15 start to the season, St. Louis could suddenly be willing to cash in.

Cardinals continue to shop their all-star reliever

Helsley hasn’t quite equaled last year’s domination thus far in 2025. He has a 4.09 ERA and a 1.545 WHIP after 11 innings pitched, with 10 strikeouts and eight walks. The Cardinals had thought that by keeping him, his worth would rise by the middle of the season, but the early outcomes haven’t benefited him.

The market is still developing, though. According to reports, Philadelphia, whose bullpen has been inconsistent, is intrigued. After being signed in the winter, closer Jordan Romano has had a terrible season, allowing 14 earned runs in just 9 1/3 innings. The Phillies are driven to make a significant impact this season as seasoned core players like Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto approach free agency.

Arizona is still a sensible choice. They still need a trustworthy closer after losing A.J. Puk to elbow inflammation and missing out on Helsley over the summer. Helsley might take up that position right away and help them with their late-game strategy.

Teams, however, will not be parting with their crown jewels. Even with his blazing stuff, Nightengale points out that the Phillies have already ruled out acquiring Helsley in exchange for top prospects Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller.

Helsley’s trade would be the latest in the Cardinals’ gradual retooling process. This summer, they decided not to trade him or Nolan Arenado, but they suddenly appear more flexible. Helsley’s future in St. Louis appears to be becoming more and more dubious as the deadline draws near.
