Right-handed reliever Dan Altavilla has returned to the Major Leagues via a one-year, $1 million agreement with the White Sox, as revealed by the team prior to Friday’s early start against the Orioles at Camden Yards.

Right-hander Miguel Castro, who will have season-ending surgery in Chicago on Tuesday after tearing his right knee’s patellar tendon in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s victory against the Mets in New York, is replaced in the bullpen by Altavilla. The procedure will be carried out by Dr. Nikhil Verma.

Altavilla missed the majority of 21 and all of 22 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he made five appearances for the Royals in 24.

“It simply demonstrates that perseverance is rewarded,” Altavilla said. “And even as we get older, you just can’t ever give up because there’s always opportunity out there. Injuries are common, especially in baseball. It’s the nature of the game, but you never pray for that. I’m glad to be here.

“Another positive contributor in the clubhouse. Excellent stuff. This year, things have become worse once again, Venable added. We appreciate the four-pitch mix, which is pretty fantastic. Additionally, he has been doing well.
