Prior to Saturday night’s game against the Tigers at Progressive Field, the seasoned reliever was reinstated off the 15-day disabled list. Prior to his retirement due to a right shoulder injury, Sewald last threw for Cleveland on April 28.
After throwing a scoreless ninth inning against the Tigers on Friday, lefty Doug Nikhazy was optioned to Triple-A Columbus by the Guardians in order to clear space on the 26-man roster. In Thursday’s season-ending game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Nikhazy joined the Guardians.
Sewald signed a $7 million, one-year contract with the Guardians in January. A $10 million mutual option for 2026 with a $1 million buyout is part of the agreement.

Sewald appeared in four rehab games for Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Akron. In four innings, he struck out five batters, gave up just one run, and did not walk a player.
