For the first time in three seasons, a former infielder for the Detroit Tigers, is back in the major leagues.

On Friday, the San Francisco Giants chose to sign Triple-A Sacramento’s Alcántara.

The Tigers acquired Alcántara, who turns 29 next week, from the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2017 deal for J.D. Martinez. Alcántara may be most recognized for his home run in his debut major league at-bat, but his powerful arm and superior shortstop defense are his true assets.

Following his release from the Tigers, Alcántara played for the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs before settling back in Arizona.

In the postgame festivities during the Diamondbacks’ 2023 World Series run, he was a well-known figure. He traveled with the squad as a possible injury replacement through the last game even though he wasn’t on the active roster.

Over the offseason, he inked a minor-league contract with the Giants.
