Although the Philadelphia Phillies had a successful season overall in 2025, their MVP runner-up, Kyle Schwarber, is now eligible to sign a free agent contract. So, the Phillies have a tough offseason ahead of them.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report thinks that even though Schwarber is probably going to stay in Philadelphia, it wouldn’t hurt to consider possible replacements. New York Mets All-Star is the best option he believes the Phillies should consider.

“How can one of the four most common sources of home runs in baseball during the last four years be replaced? By signing one of the other members of the quartet, of course. If the Phillies were to acquire Alonso, they could send Bryce Harper back to right field and thankfully be done with Nick Castellanos’ glove. (If they maintain Castellanos in 2026, at all.),” Miller wrote.
This past season, Alonso slashed .272/.347/.524/.871 with 41 doubles, 38 home runs, and 126 RBI in 162 games played. He would be the perfect sidegrade to Schwarber, considering he can play the field and gets roughly the same amount of RBI as Schwarber.
Hopefully, the Phillies are able to keep their core, including Schwarber. However, if they can’t, landing someone like Alonso on a long-term deal would be a wonderful rebound move.
