In the midst of a terrible season thus far, San Diego Padres star Manny Machado just went on a tirade over analytics.

However, this isn’t analytics in the complex meaning. $273 million is calculated by multiplying seven years by $39 million annually. Starting with the 2027 MLB season, the Padres still owe Machado that amount.

And wow, that seems like it might be really bad.

With an OPS that starts with a “5,” Machado is now hitting below the Mendoza Line.

In July, Machado will turn 34.

His age-40 season is covered by his contract.

And sooner rather than later, he will be unplayable at this rate.

Yes, there is a scenario in which Machado regains some of his skills, at least for a few seasons.

But is there any universe where the latter couple seasons of this deal aren’t tremendously painful? It’s really difficult to spot one.

It was always hoped that Machado would do exceptionally well in the first half of the contract when he signed it. However, he has fallen off a cliff and isn’t even at the halfway park.

The Padres can only hope and pray that things improve at this point. Because, despite popular belief, things can still go considerably worse.
