Hugh Freeze, the football coach at Auburn, is bringing in another big transfer. Jacoby Mathews, a former five-star safety, has committed to Auburn, according to On3. In the past, Mathews was a member of Texas A&M.
Since he instantly strengthens the team’s secondary, Mathews is a huge addition. It is anticipated that the safety will enroll at Auburn for the fall semester fairly shortly.
Mathews stated, “Sometime in the next two weeks.” “Everything is finalized.”
Mathews is still eligible for two more years. When Jimbo Fisher was still the head coach, he made his initial commitment to the Aggies. During the 2024 season, Mathews did not log any statistics since he was attending a junior college to complete his coursework. He had 67 total tackles throughout his two years with the Aggies.
During his time in college, Mathews has also defended seven passes and made one interception.
Auburn football is trying to get to the top of the SEC
For the Tigers and Coach Freeze, this is a crucial season. In his first two seasons there, Freeze has seen a range of results, including two losing campaigns. In 2025, Auburn football supporters anticipate significant progress from the squad.
Mathews’s addition is beneficial. For the upcoming season, Auburn boasts a strong transfer class. Among them is quarterback Jackson Arnold, a former Oklahoma player. Last season, Arnold passed for over 1,400 passing yards. Additionally, he completed around 63% of the passes he attempted for the Sooners. One of the strongest candidates to start as quarterback is Arnold.
When Freeze arrived at Auburn, he was viewed as a significant hire. Despite being embroiled in a controversy at Ole Miss, he enjoyed success in his prior positions at Liberty, Arkansas State, and Ole Miss. He must undoubtedly have a successful season at Auburn or face termination at the conclusion of the 2025 season. After his first two seasons, Freeze has only managed 11 victories. He also disclosed that he is battling cancer this offseason.

Auburn’s 2025 season begins on August 29 when they play Baylor.
