The Boston Red Sox are reaching the end of the season and want to make their first postseason berth since 2021. Following that, they will have to concentrate on the offseason.

In the offseason, their star player, Alex Bregman, might opt to leave in free agency. They will need to replace him, and Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy feels Nolan Arenado, the St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman, might be the answer.

“The fit isn’t as clear. Boston was at least on Arenado’s radar, and there was a point when it appeared like a deal may be reached. However, the Red Sox signed Bregman. If Bregman were to go this summer, the fit is clear. If Bregman remains, there’s still a case that the Red Sox might need a boost at first base, and Arenado made it clear last year that he’d be prepared to play the position.”

Nolan Arenado's two-run single

This season, Arenado hit.236/.292/.365/.656, with 10 home runs and 49 RBI. Arenado only played 102 games due to a shoulder ailment.

Arenado, who has won ten Gold Gloves and six Platinum Gloves, would be an excellent defensive substitute at the hot corner. However, his bat is far poorer than Bregman’s, as seen by his subpar stat performance.

Hopefully, the Sox can find a way to keep Bregman, who is the overall superior player. However, if he does walk, the Sox may be able to sign Arenado to a favorable contract.
