Mark Pope is still actively looking for his 2026 recruiting class’s first formal commitment. If he can pull it off, the ideal in-state prospect has dropped into his lap.

the current Mr. Basketball of Kentucky. According to NextUpRecruits, Jake Feldhaus requested to be released from his national letter of intent with Belmont. The senior ended his season with 20.7 points and 13 rebounds per game after losing in the 11th region tournament.

The Wildcats, who will be hosting another SEC legacy recruit on Wednesday, have a tremendous opportunity with his sudden availability.

The ultimate Kentucky basketball bloodline

Some of you of a certain age will remember that Feldhaus name right away; if you don’t, ask your parents; they will know. The reason is that in the Bluegrass State, the family is almost royalty.

Allen Feldhaus Sr., Jake’s grandpa, began the tradition by performing for Adolph Rupp from 1959 until 1962.

The following generation then inherited the basketball genes. Under the guidance of his uncle Allen Feldhaus Jr., who has coached Madison Central to a Sweet 16 championship in 29 years, Jake played high school basketball at Madison Central.

A sudden Mr. Basketball decommitment hands Mark Pope the ultimate Kentucky legacy opportunity

However, Jake’s father has the most well-known link. A true Kentucky legend is Deron Feldhaus.

Deron was a key component of Rick Pitino’s incredible comeback after the program was placed on probation.

He scored 1,232 points in his career as one of “The Unforgettables,” helping the Wildcats defeat Duke in the historic 1992 regional final. Even though the year ended badly, it contributed to the announcement that Lexington was once more a destination.

His son can now wear the blue and white.

An undeniable Trent Noah parallel

Kentucky Wildcats basketball player profile: Trent Noah

It reminds me somewhat of what transpired with another child from Kentucky. Do you recall Trent Noah’s request for his NLI release before to his departure for South Carolina? Noah was given a seat at Lexington when Mark Pope took charge.

Jake Feldhaus could perform the same thing with ease.

He obviously has the size and rebounding ability to compete at the high-major level.

Jumpstarting an empty recruiting board

A spark on the recruiting path is urgently needed by Kentucky. After the disappointing season finale, Mark Pope needs something good to happen. A native player with strong roots to Kentucky basketball’s most cherished era would immediately reenergize the fan base.

Feldhaus will be the most familiar with the weight and expectations of wearing Kentucky, which Pope needs. That does not imply that he will excel at the collegiate level, but I do believe that in the correct circumstances, he may be highly effective. Pope might be the catalyst for the remainder of the 2026 class if he can seal the deal.
