We spent the entire summer leading up to the 2025–26 season hearing about “The Assignment,” which was Kentucky Basketball’s goal to win the school’s eighth national championship. The Wildcats were ranked ninth in the AP Poll at the beginning of the season.

After that, things got worse.

Kentucky Basketball Confidential, a documentary that followed the squad behind the scenes throughout the 2025–2026 season, was broadcast on CBS on Saturday. Mark Pope concluded it by summarizing his thoughts on the season, which saw Iowa State boatrace Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament’s Second Round.

“We failed to accomplish our objective. We didn’t achieve all of our goals,” Pope said. However, this was a lovely time for growth, which is difficult, unpleasant, dirty, and challenging. It is the foundation of greatness.

“We repeatedly fail in order to succeed, and this season was no exception.”

During the season, Kentucky had some high points, like as two victories over Tennessee and a victory over Arkansas on the road. With a full roster, Kentucky defeated St. John’s in December.

Sadly, that whole roster didn’t stay long, and we never got to witness this team’s full potential.

We’ll now see if Pope can apply the knowledge gained from this season to a more successful run in the NCAA Tournament the following year.
