One of the most cherished members of Kentucky’s 2025–26 team is returning. Malachi Moreno, a large man from Kentucky, is expected to return to Lexington on Monday. In addition to signing a contract to return to Kentucky, Moreno has entered his name in the NBA Draft in order to receive feedback. Moreno will therefore be a Wildcat if he withdraws.

Moreno had several amazing opportunities to build on after performing better than anticipated in the first season after Jayden Quaintance missed all but four games. The Kentucky native from Great Crossing High School did not perform as well as BBN had anticipated, but his freshman season performance should excite supporters about what he might accomplish in the future. It’s difficult to deal with the SEC’s physicality, but Moreno performed admirably in a position that wasn’t anticipated for him.

The national media is not giving Kentucky freshman Malachi Moreno enough love

Moreno’s outstanding play this past season earned him a spot on the All-SEC Freshman Team. The 7-foot big man averaged 7.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game in his first season. He played a significant role in Kentucky’s ability to rebound, and in his sophomore year, he will want to improve his ability to handle the roughness of the SEC. His spectacular buzzer-beater against LSU is undoubtedly his most renowned moment from his rookie campaign, but what really made him effective was his ability to get boards, particularly on the offensive glass.

Given what supporters anticipated from him going into the season—that is, to offer a spark as a backup big man—the 7-foot big man was incredibly crucial to this Kentucky squad. However, he delivered production as a starter and answered when his number was called. Moreno was in the top three for blocks and the top 15 for both offensive and defensive rebound percentages in the SEC. His second year may be very important for him because he was a consistent contributor.

What aspect of Moreno’s development is Mark Pope most excited about for the next season? enhancing his IQ through his worthwhile freshman experiences. “Malachi is going to continue to grow in terms of his IQ with the game, like, I think inherently, he’s a really, really smart player,” Pope stated towards the end of the previous campaign. “As he gains more knowledge, he will be really focused on how he can apply it to his team and be able to interact with guys in the appropriate locations and at the appropriate times. I believe that will contribute to his development as a leader.

One of Kentucky’s most reliable contributors—and one of their own—returned for another season. The NBA Draft process’s criticism will only assist him in focusing on his areas of weakness. Malachi, welcome back!
