On his 30th birthday on Saturday, the New York Mets gave the star catcher a big contract deal, securing one of the top backup catchers in baseball through the 2028 campaign.
Before Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, Torrens stated via an interpreter, “It’s special, honestly.” “I’m overjoyed about it. Everyone at the Mets has been incredibly kind to me since I arrived. I consider myself to be a member of the family.

Before being acquired by the Mets from the New York Yankees in May 2024, Torrens was a journeyman who had played for five different teams.
As he filled in for injured starter Francisco Alvarez and shared time with Alvarez on a Mets club that finished 89-73 and proceeded to the NL Championship Series, he immediately established himself as a formidable defensive player.
Mets reward backup catcher Torrens with a two-year, $11.5 million contract extension.
Last season, Torrens, a nominee for a National League Gold Glove, had the second-highest caught-stealing rate in the majors, throwing out 20 of 49 runners (40.8%) who tried to steal. He topped baseball with 12 catchers who were caught stealing more than average, according to Baseball Savant. This season, he has stopped four out of seven base-stealers.
Carlos Mendoza, the manager of the Mets, described Torrens’ ability to dominate the running game as “huge, huge.” He’s been a fantastic player, a great citizen, and one of the league’s greatest backup catchers, if not the best. I’m happy that he’s finally receiving recognition and I’m proud of him.
