The Philadelphia Phillies are in desperate need of a right-handed hitter this season. Alec Bohm and Trea Turner are having difficulties, Adolis Garcia may be out for the remainder of the season, and none of their other options are sufficient.
But with the future in mind, it will be crucial for the Phillies to avoid overspending when it comes to acquiring that right-handed hitter at the trade deadline. Finding the appropriate player in the correct place is also crucial.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer connected the Phillies to an absurd trade proposal for a $182 million infielder from the San Francisco Giants. Willy Adames, a shortstop, is that infielder; the Philleis would be making a grave error in acquiring him.
“Wildest landing spot: Philadelphia Phillies,” writes Rymer. “Yes, Trea Turner continues to play shortstop for the Phillies every day. And no, trading him for Adames in exchange for poor contracts is not the plan here.”
According to Rymer’s trade proposal, the Phillies would make a significant trade with the Giants to acquire Adames, who would then either play third base or move Turner to second base or the outfield to create way for Adames.
Given how poorly the Phillies’ right-handed hitters have performed this season, Adames’.692 OPS and 96 OPS+ might be preferable to their present choices in a vacuum.
However, adding Adames in a trade this summer would be a huge mistake given the enormous $182 million, seven-year contract until the 2031 season.
The Phillies might be able to add Adames in a high-risk, high-reward deal if Turner wasn’t on the roster, hoping that he would revert to the.794 OPS form he displayed with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024.
However, it would be a grave error to rely on that with Turner on the roster and no actual space for Adames in the lineup or on the field this season.
It is highly doubtful that the Phillies will ever trade for Adames on his current contract, but if they did, it would be after the 2026 season, when Bohm departs in free agency, or after Bryson Stott departs in free agency in 2027.
However, the Phillies shouldn’t be interested in Adames at this time. The fit is just nonsensical, and he is far too costly. The Phillies are the “wildest” trade destination, according to Rymer, but this match is completely nonsensical.
