This summer, the New York Yankees made some significant infield adjustments. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was moved to second base and Gleyber Torres was allowed to walk. Paul Goldschmidt was also signed by the squad to play first base. At third base, though, their platoon of Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu might be problematic.
Given LeMahieu’s injury, Cabrera would be more effective as a bench or utility player. The Yankees might investigate the second and third base markets close to the trade deadline thanks to Chisholm’s flexibility. Dylan Sanders of Sports Illustrated mentioned Jeff McNeil as a possible Yankee target.
“McNeil just recently made his season debut, but still has some trade value as a consistently solid player on the middle of the infield,” Sanders stated. “He has a .257/.332/.380 slash line over the last three years and is a more-than-solid defensive presence.” Chisholm would move to third base if McNeil were added. McNeil was a previous Silver Slugger and a two-time All-Star. He also took home the National League hitting title in 2022.

He is under club control through 2027 after agreeing to a four-year, $50 million contract in 2023. He just made his season debut while battling an oblique ailment. He is 4-for-12 with three RBIs and a home run in three games thus far this season. Although he has mostly played second base during his career, he has made 26 starts at third base. By moving Chisholm into the hot corner, McNeil would provide the Yankees with a much-needed infield improvement.
